Mr. Orr is a senior banking and investment professional. After 18 years with the CIBC group of companies, Mr. Orr founded Orr Capital Management to pursue private investments in the financial services sector.
While at CIBC, Mr. Orr served in the most senior capacities across the bank. In his most recent role, he was Executive Vice-President, Strategy and Corporate Development, responsible for the Strategy and Corporate Development functions of the CIBC group and for the Merchant Banking business of CIBC’s Wholesale Bank. The Merchant Bank was responsible for the origination, execution and management of the strategic and financial investments of the bank (both direct and indirect).
During his tenure, he served as a member or CIBC’s Senior Leadership Team, the Wholesale Bank Global Management Committee, the Retail Bank’s Management Committee and a member of CIBC’s Asset and Liability and Risk Management and Lending Committees.
From 2008 to 2011, he served as the Chief Executive Officer of First Caribbean International Bank, head quartered in Barbados; a publicly traded, CIBC majority owned institution, with approximately $10 billion dollars in assets and $1.5 billion in market capitalization, operation in 17 countries across the Caribbean, providing retail, commercial, investment banking, wealth management and insurance services through 3,400 employees in 100 branches and offices.
Prior to First Caribbean, he served as Executive Vice-President and Managing Director, Deputy Head of Corporate Development and Head of CIBC International Retail Banking. As Head of CIBC’s International Retail Banking operations, he was responsible for CIBC’s private banking businesses in Asia and the Caribbean. From 2003 to 2007, Mr. Orr served as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Amicus Bank; a Schedule I Canadian bank, wholly owned by CIBC, and as Executive Vice-President, Amicus, a Division of CIBC. Amicus is the business unit responsible for the President’s Choice Financial, value based, direct banking offering with its primary distribution through Loblaw stores in approximately 230 locations across Canada.
Prior to 2003, Mr. Orr worked in CIBC’s Merchant Bank, investing in a broad range of industries with an increasing specialization in Financial Services, he also worked in increasingly senior roles in the Equity Capital Markets and Investment Banking groups of CIBC’s Wholesale Bank.
Mr. Orr has served on numerous Board of Directors including The Bank of N.T. Butterfield (retail and commercial banking), CIBC Investment (Cayman) Ltd.(investments), FirstCaribbean International Bank (retail, commercial, investment banking, wealth management and insurance), CIBC Bank and Trust Company (Cayman and Bahamas) Ltd.(private banking), Amicus Bank (retail direct banking), Intria Items Inc. (payment and business information processing) , Alpha Trading Systems (exchange), Algorithmics Inc. (risk management), Juniper Bank (credit cards), First International Asset Management Inc. (asset management), CashEdge Inc. (payments and account aggregation) and Points International Ltd. (loyalty management).
Prior to joining CIBC, Mr. Orr practiced law in Toronto, specializing in Corporate Securities, and is a member of Law Society of Upper Canada. Mr. Orr received a BA Economics and a Masters of Business Administration from the University of Western Ontario in London, Ontario and a law degree from Dalhousie University, Halifax, Nova Scotia.
